FAQs

Who is an ideal candidate for the High-Performance Healing System™ ?

Anyone who has been suffering from low back or neck pain, especially severe and chronic, can benefit from the High-Performance Healing System™. Some of the common causes of severe back pain and neck pain that Back Clinics of Canada treats are bulging and/or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, stenosis and spinal arthritis. Every patient is carefully screened before their examination regarding their medical history to ensure that they are medically appropriate for our care.
Many of our patients have unsuccessfully tried other conventional treatments, such as physical therapy, manipulation, ultrasound, , anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, narcotics, cortisone injections, and even nerve blocks, massage and acupuncture. When these treatment modes have failed them, people look to Back Clinics of Canada because of how different and successful the care is.
The majority of our patients complete the care with excellent results. A common phrase we hear is “I wish I would have come in to see you first!” Definitely look into the High-Performance Healing System™ before you consider surgery or other invasive procedures.

I’ve tried just about everything. What is different about this care?

Many of our patients have tried a myriad of other treatments, some have tried it all, including failed back surgery. It’s natural for people to be skeptical and apprehensive and have doubts at first. Here are some important things to understand about the High-Performance Healing System™ offered at Back Clinics of Canada:

1. Care is non-surgical, non-invasive and drug-free.

2. The care specifically targets and delivers healing forces to the source of the problem, not merely treating the symptom. In particular, the focus of the healing is on the damaged disc. This is not a band-aid solution. It supports the reduction of disc bulges that could be responsible for irritating nerves, also the healing of damaged connective tissue (discs are made of connective tissue), reduces pain and inflammation at the source of the problem, rehydrating and revitalizing the damaged disc which can and often results in the possibility of powerful true, long-lasting freedom from pain.

3. The patient selection process at Back Clinics of Canada is specific and rigorous to ensure only the most appropriate qualified candidates are accepted for care and are closely monitored throughout their program of care.

4. Many back and neck pain patients who receive care at our back pain clinic, including those who are long-term chronic or post-surgical cases, can resume normal activities.

For more information, visit High-Performance Healing System™ where we explain the program in more detail.

Who is not a candidate for the High-Performance Healing System™?

Speak with Dr. Nusbaum, and allow him to determine whether or not you are a candidate for care. Many patients who come to Back Clinics of Canada think they have done everything possible to get rid of their pain and have no options left. After a free, no-obligation consultation/examination, they learn they are in fact suited to receive the treatment. Weeks later most of our patients are amazed at their improvement.

I’ve already had surgery on my spine. Is the High-Performance Healing System™ still effective?

Unfortunately, there are patients who undergo spinal surgery and still continue to experience severe pain. In fact, we regularly see patients at Back Clinics of Canada who have had failed back surgery. In many cases, a post-surgical patient can still qualify for care providing they don’t have metal implants or fusions. Speak to any of the team members at Back Clinics of Canada to discuss a thorough list of surgeries that could prevent acceptance for care.

How does this treatment work and why is it so effective?

There are several components to the system. At the core is a powerful combination of non-surgical spinal decompression, class IV K-laser therapy and the Disc Renewal Plus™ supplementation system. In addition
to these components that are other important aspects of the care including, doctor prescribed flexibility and core strengthening stretches, and more. While any one of these treatments alone may help with pain relief, Dr. Nusbaum has found the unique combination of the treatments he will choose with the patient offers the best chance for targeted, robust, accelerated, and lasting results.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is designed to apply targeted and calculated decompression
stretching forces to the specific disc responsible for the patient’s pain and symptoms. The stretching forces create negative pressure — like a vacuum — inside the disc. This vacuum effect rehydrates and revitalizes the disc by drawing water, oxygen and nutrients back into the disc. It allows the disc to reduce its bulge and herniations while simultaneously improving the disc height. As the rehydration and disc
healing takes place, pressure on the nerve is reduced and nerve healing takes place.

Class IV Summus therapy belongs to the most powerful level of laser available in the world today. Back Clinics of Canada is the first back pain clinic in Canada to offer Class IV Summus Therapy. It is a medical breakthrough in therapeutic laser technology.

Disc renewal Plus™ nutritional supplementation is a proprietary nutritional system developed by Dr.Nusbaum to support the healing of damaged connective tissue (discs are made of this) while supporting a reduction of pain and inflammation. This is only available to Back Clinics of Canada patients. For more information about High-Performance Healing System™ click here.

How does non-surgical Spinal Decompression treatment differ from ordinary spinal traction?

Traction is a procedure that stretches your spine over a large general part of the spine such as the
lumbar spine, as opposed to a specific disc like in spinal decompression. As well, the general, non-
specific characteristics of traction make it unable to create the magnitude of healing forces necessary to repair a damaged disc that can be done safely with spinal decompression. Also, spinal decompression therapy offers advanced feedback control which can prevent a muscle spasm response to care.

Non-surgical Spinal Decompression is a medically tested breakthrough technology that is capable of focusing up to 90 percent of the healing forces of true decompression to the single specific area of disc damage. Decompression forces are individually calculated for each person. The Spinal Decompression systems used at Back Clinics of Canada have a unique feedback system which constantly monitors and adjusts the motor’s activity, to the patient’s response to the care thousands of times per second, ensuring a pain-free experience.

Is the care painful?

It is not painful. In fact, many patients find it to be relaxing. The system is very quiet. You can watch a video, listen to music, read a book, or even nap during treatment. After a session, some patients may feel a slight tenderness, similar to what you would feel after working out in the gym.

Why do medical doctors not know about Spinal Decompression or Laser Therapy?

Spinal Decompression technology has been around since 1991 and the 1970’s for therapeutic lasers, which was first used in Europe. Most medical doctors treat back and neck pain through medications such as muscle relaxers, anti inflammatories, narcotics, cortisone injections, nerve blocks, physical therapy
and surgery, and so they often don’t learn about these other approaches simply because spinal
decompression and laser therapy falls outside of their traditional approach.

Doctors are always learning about new medications and surgical procedures, usually from pharmaceutical and surgical companies. Class IV K-laser and non-surgical Spinal Decompression may not show up on their radar screen. Even so, many doctors do refer patients to us. And many doctors receive care themselves.

Do I need a referral from my family doctor?

No referral is necessary to come to Back Clinics of Canada. You may call directly to schedule a
consultation.

Many patients have already seen their doctor for their severe back and neck pain, and they may have X-rays, an MRI, or a CT-Scan. We ask that every prospective patient bring these to the consultation appointment, if they have such reports. If you have already had a recent MRI, CT Scan and/or x-ray, be sure to register with either the Pocket Health or MyChart records system associated with the hospital or lab that your images were taken so your images and reports may be viewed by our doctor during your
visit.

If I undergo care at Back Clinics of Canada, how long does it take to see results?

While results vary between patients, some patients experience pain relief after only a few sessions while most patients experience pain-relief by the end of the second week or so of care, and some later.

How long does it take to complete a program of care?

All programs of care are individually created by the doctor according to the specific needs of the patient.

The types of treatments and the number of sessions can vary depending on factors ranging from diagnosis, age, and health of patients. Often programs can include up to 20 treatment sessions, scheduled over a five-week period.

Are there any side effects to the treatment?

Our patients don’t usually report side effects or pain while on the bed, other than feeling a stretching sensation, which doesn’t usually feel uncomfortable. It is possible that a person may feel sore when coming off the decompression bed, however tremendous effort has been made in developing ways to avoid or minimize any soreness when coming off the machine. Some patients feel a slight achiness after a treatment session, similar to a muscle ache you might feel after a good workout. That’s all. With regards to lasers, patients don’t feel much of anything other than some who feel a sensation of comforting warmth.

Is there any risk to the patient undergoing care of the High-Performance Healing System™?

In less than 5 % of cases, patients can experience short lasting achiness when coming off the
decompression machine, which is usually eliminated with an icing application in our clinic. The High-Performance Healing System™ is safe and surprisingly comfortable. The non-surgical spinal decompression systems used at Back Clinics of Canada has a computerized feedback system that continuously monitors and adjusts the decompression forces throughout a session. These adjustments occur in response to many factors, including the body’s response to the forces. This ensures that the patient’s treatment is pain-free and precise in its performance and delivery. Also, our system features ambient lighting to illuminate the foot platform. This makes it safer and easier for a patient to find their footing when they exit off the machine after a treatment session has been completed.

Can I continue to work while I’m undergoing care?

Most of our patients continue to work while receiving care. In the event your work requires you to perform physically stressful activities including bending, lifting and /or twisting, discuss this with Dr. Nusbaum so he can recommend the best way to perform your work tasks.

Is Back Clinics of Canada care covered by OHIP, WSIB, or ODSP?

Our care is not covered by OHIP, WSIB or ODSP. We are a private clinic. Patients pay for their care. If you have extended group insurance, a portion of your care may be covered by your extended health insurance program. The majority of our patients tell us that they do receive reimbursements.
