Advanced Sciatica Treatment in Toronto & Vaughan
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a lower back condition with very specific symptoms. Sciatic nerve pain radiates from the lower back, through the buttock, along the back or side of the thigh, and down into the calf. For some patients, the pain reaches the feet and toes.
This path of pain follows the two sciatic nerves, which branch off from the nerve roots in the lumbar spine. Because of this, sciatica almost always affects only one side of the body, making it easier to identify than other back conditions.
Sciatica pain occurs when something irritates the sciatic nerve or causes compression of the sciatic nerve. When that compression is left untreated, it can severely limit daily activities and quality of life.
What are the Symptoms and Causes of Sciatica?
Sciatic nerve pain is distinct. Symptoms include:
- Pain radiating from the lower back, down into the buttock, along the back or side of the thigh, and down as far as the toes
- Numbness and/or burning
- Tingling or muscle weakness
- Difficulty moving or controlling the leg
- Difficulty sitting or standing without experiencing pain
Sciatica can be debilitating. Episodes may last a few days or stretch into months. Anything that irritates the sciatic nerve or increases compression of the sciatic nerve can trigger it. Common causes include:
- Spinal Disc Herniation
- Spinal Stenosis
- Spinal Subluxations/Misalignment
- Tumors
- Trauma
- Piriformis Syndrome
- Pregnancy
- Habits which cause misalignment of vertebrae in the lower spine
Why Common Approaches Often Miss the Mark
Many patients try to manage sciatica pain on their own — applying heat, using an ice pack for 20 minutes at a time, or relying on anti inflammatory medication. While applying heat or cold to the painful area can temporarily reduce pain and muscle spasms, and physical therapy can support recovery, these approaches don’t address the root cause: relieving pressure on the nerve itself.
Without directly relieving pressure on the nerve, sciatica pain tends to return. Blood flow to the damaged area stays restricted. The disc or structure compressing the nerve remains in place. Daily activities stay limited.
Our sciatica treatment in Vaughan and Toronto takes a different approach — one built around gentle, targeted care that gets to the source.
Sciatica Treatment Options
Dr. Ron Nusbaum developed a unique three-step system to deliver rapid, non-invasive, and lasting sciatica pain relief. The High-Performance Healing System™ is the first of its kind in Canada and has succeeded where conventional treatment options have failed. The system involves three steps:
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
Spinal decompression is a non-invasive treatment option that gently and precisely stretches the damaged disc. It works by relieving pressure on the nerve roots, reducing inflammation, and jumpstarting the disc’s natural healing. Think of it as an outside-in approach, targeting the source of compression of the sciatic nerve without surgery.
Class IV Laser Therapy
Also called photobiomodulation, this deep-penetrating laser targets the damaged disc directly. The laser light interacts with disc cells to reduce pain, improve blood flow, and accelerate tissue repair. It complements decompression by working from the inside out, promoting healing at the cellular level and helping to reduce pain in the painful area faster.
Disc Renewal Plus™
This all-natural nutritional supplement was formulated by Dr. Nusbaum to reduce pain and inflammation and support the repair of damaged connective tissue. Available exclusively to Back Clinics of Canada patients, it supports the healing process nutritionally, working alongside laser therapy for comprehensive sciatica treatment.
