It begins in 1998, when I had the first of two major lower-back surgeries. Before the second operation, which was a fusion, I was leaning heavily on the arm of my desk chair to reduce the pain. But… I herniated a disk in my neck. I suffered constant and severe pain for eight weeks, until I had an epidural cortisone shot. After that, I would re-injure my neck about every two years… another several weeks of pain, until another shot.
I injured my neck again in November 2010… much worse than ever before. Cortisone shots proved useless. Most days, I would take as many as 24 Tylenol with codeine tablets. At night, I would drink. Even in a stupefied state, I was lucky to get three to four hours of sleep.
Every aspect of my life suffered, including my work, which is a real passion for me. I spend hours every day at my computer. Holding my head up to look at my computer screen was impossible. It was exactly the position that triggered the most intense pain.
After hearing a radio ad, a friend suggested the Back Clinics of Canada. I resisted… the travel was a factor – the thought of driving to the clinic a few times a week. To drive, I would have to hold my head up… the very position that was so agonizing for me.
The “final straw” came in July. My daughter, who lives in North Carolina, was here for a visit. There is no more precious time for me than my time with her and my new granddaughter. But by mid-afternoon every day of their short visit, I would drug up, have a few drinks, and lie down.
After eight months of suffering and every type of “conventional” treatment, the time had come for me to try care at Back Clinics of Canada. Within six treatments, the pain was almost gone. After the full course of treatments, I am working 12 to 16 hours days as I play “catch-up.” I can do everything!
